Theses systems cannot work, but lets look at the fundamental reason why.  No matter what your system calls for you to do, at its root you are combining a variety of bets.  By doing this the statistical house edge of all of the house edges collapse into one, overall house edge that you will be playing with.  Craps systems are only combinations of losing bets, and are therefore fundamentally flawed.

That is the theoretical reason why these systems will fail, but lets look at a specific example.  The Iron Cross is probably the most popular betting system out there.  It is composed of a field bet and then place bets on the 5, the 6, and the 8.  This system is famous for the claim “Win on anything but 7!” but how good is it in the long run?  When you take all the prospective house edges and combine them into one average, you see that the Iron Cross has a cumulative house edge of 3.87%.

Some system-pushers say they can avoid the house edge by applying a count.  Basically this technique attempts to keep you betting on hot streaks, and then let you know when get your money off the table before things turn sour.  Believing that the previous rolls or rounds have an impact on the future dice rolls is known as a ‘Gamblers Fallacy’.  Events like the roll of a dice are independent of past events.  Even if you rolled three 7’s in a row, your next roll has the same chances of being a 7 as any other roll.

Even if systems are not all they are cracked up to be, they can offer one big advantage: quality of play.  For instance, the bets that make up the iron cross provide an easy way to instantly read each dice roll (7 or not) and after each roll you will either win or lose money.  This creates an experience that is just as fun as a proposition bet without all the risk.  A 3.87% edge is far, far lower than the edge carried by some proposition bets (up to 16%!).  If you understand that you are fighting a statistically uphill battle, but would like some of the other benefits offered by these systems, then they may be just the right things for you.  Just make sure you are not deceived by the all the hype that surrounds some of the most popular craps systems.
